Question by brett: i have just started fly fishing and not sure on rod and reel sizes?
i have bought a fly fishing kit with size 5/6 rod and reel for small river fishing but im looking at other rods i was looking at size 7/8 rods and reels but cant see any difference between the rods and was wondering why i cant just put a size 7/8 line and reel and use my 5/6 rod ive looked but cant find any thing that tells me why i cant
please help

For a small stream i would be using a 3/4 rod and match it up with the same size reel and line and i would use it for trout but i dont know what kind of fish you will be fishing for.

There is a big difference in those rods that you mentioned. The actions and their designs are very different. That means if you put an 8 weight line on a 5 weight rod you will be overloading it a 5 weight rod will not cast an 8 weight line right.
They may look similar but they are very different.
Not only that you can try to put a 8 weight line on your small reel and find that it may fit but you will probably have to take off a lot of your backing to make it fit.
