Question by tramp: fly fishing with a spinning rod?
So basically i was cycling along a path today with my mate around 8:30 (as its getting dark) and i find a place to look out onto a lake. It was really normal until i noticed hundreds of trout surfacing to catch flies.
I now believe i could actually catch a lot of fish by using a fly but the only problem is i can’t fly fish but i’ve heard you can use a spinning rod, is this true and any help would be much appreciated!

You can but you can’t cast very far because of the little weight. Fly fishing took about a week for me to pick it up. Nice easy technigue if you can have patience. It took me 3 trips to hook a trout on a fly because of the factor of setting the hook.
Give your answer to this question below!
An ultra-light Spinning rod and 2 or 4lb test will cast them at least a small bit of distance. Normally they’re fished under floats when you’re using Fly’s with Spinning gear. Also adding a small split-shot could help if you rule out the bobber thing.
Your best option is to use a “Adjust-a-bubble” and a Pistol Pete fly. This combo is designed for use with spinning rods and reels. To successfully fish a Pistol Pete, cast out as far was you want and reel in your line EXTREMELY slow. Randomly pausing for a couple seconds in the middle of your retrieve is also a good idea.

You can buy Adjust-a-bubbles and Pistol Petes at many sporting goods stores that carry fishing equipment. Even some Walmarts will have what you need.
Good luck!
Yes it is possible, but it’s very hard to get out there. I would probably reccomend a using the hevier flies you have. Or you could try to learn how to use a fly rod right. It’s tough though, it took me almost a whole month to get it down.
Mike nailed the Q. Thumbs up.
use a short section of fly line called a shooting head & then you will be able cast the fly ,but why not spin for the trout with small spoons ……………………
You can fish any kind of fly on spinning gear as long as you use some kind of casting bubble. Stay away from anything that does not have a streamlined profile (the adjusta-bubble is a solid choice) and use plenty of leader below the bubble to keep it away from your fly. Fly selection should be based on what the trout are eating, so don’t just buy one kind of fly, you have to be prepared to come very, very close to representing exactly what the trout are eating, especially in the situation you’re describing. Those trout won’t just hit any old fly when there’s a hatch on, so your fly must look like what they’re eating. As for lures and bait, you may pick up the odd fish, just like if you use the wrong kind of fly, but get that fly selection right and you’ll whack them throughout the entire hatch.
